SMS Sender ID Register
The SMS Sender ID Register is an Australian Government initiative established to help reduce scams and improve trust in SMS communications.
The Register records sender IDs (the names or labels that appear as the sender of an SMS or MMS message, such as a business name) used by legitimate organisations.
From 1 July 2026, if a sender identification message is sent which includes a sender identification that is not registered in the Register, the sender identification message will be labelled as ‘Unverified’.
About the Register
The Register helps protect customers by ensuring that:
- Only verified sender IDs can be used in SMS and MMS messages.
- Messages using unregistered sender IDs may be flagged or disrupted.
- Scammers are less able to impersonate trusted brands or organisations.
This improves confidence that messages are from genuine senders.
How it affects businesses and organisations sending messages
If you send SMS or MMS messages using a sender ID (rather than a phone number), you may need to:
- Register your sender ID on the SMS Sender ID Register.
- Provide evidence that you are authorised to use that sender ID.
- Work with Simpel to complete the registration.
If a sender ID is not registered:
- Messages may be modified (for example, replaced with “Unverified”).
- Messages may be blocked or disrupted.
Our role
Simpel can:
- Assist eligible customers to apply to register sender IDs.
- Verify information provided in support of registration.
- Submit registration applications where required.
- Ensure compliance with the SMS Sender ID Register Industry Standard.
What you need to do to register
If you are a customer using SMS or MMS sender IDs:
- Contact us if you intend to use or are currently using a sender ID
- Provide the required information and supporting documentation.
Information required for registration
To register a sender ID, you may need to provide:
- Business details.
- Contact details for a person authorised to act on behalf of your business.
- Evidence linking the sender ID to your organisation (e.g. business name, domain name, or trademark).
Additional requirements may apply depending on the circumstances.
What happens if you don’t register
If your sender ID is not registered, SMS will be delivered with a generic phone number displayed instead of a sender ID.
Ongoing obligations
Registered sender IDs must:
- Be used only by authorised parties.
- Continue to meet eligibility and verification requirements.
- Be kept accurate and up to date.
We may contact you if updates or revalidation are required.
